How To Paint Watercolour Landscapes

When it comes to painting your own watercolor landscapes, the most important thing you need to remember is practice. Any kind of artistic creation you make is not simply going to be easy to do, especially if the medium is new to you. Watercolor is a very specific art form and it is different from other forms of paint. In order to create the perfect landscape, you really need to know some general specifics about using the watercolor paint and how you need to use it in order to obtain the very best look and feel for your landscape painting.

First off, there are some basics. The first is you need to allow the watercolor layer of paint you put down on the page to dry before moving onto another paint that is going to touch the same color. If you do not, it is just going to mix on the page and give alter the look of your painting. You also need to consider that the more water you use in the watercolor, the lighter the paint is going to look. The paper you use is also important as well. You need to obtain watercolor paper for this task, otherwise the paper you use is just going to fold and wave when it absorbs the water, which is not something you want.

When you start with the watercolor landscapes, you want to put down the background color first. This is usually the paint that is going to be the lightest yet cover the most amount of space, such as the ground or sky. Mix more water with this first and lay it down. If you have trouble keeping the sky or other areas of the painting a complete, unison color, you can put down a water wash over the desired area. This is where you just take a large paint brush, dip it in water and paint a light coat of water over the area. You can then take the ink and paint over the wet paper. With the paper already wet, you are not going to get any of the hard edges or lines you might when trying to paint across the page on your own.

After the background on your landscape has dried, you are able to go in and paint in more detail. It is generally a good idea to start with the lighter colors first and work your way to darker colors. This is because you are able to paint over light colors, but once you have a dark color down, you are not able to paint over it. This is especially important if you are painting in watercolors on a landscape. There are all sorts of different shades of colors, but there is almost always a wide tone from light to dark.

Lastly, you never want to use the black ink, even when trying to darken a color. There are no actual blacks in nature. It is only manmade, so stick away from it.
